Vanilla Planifolia and Vanilla Tahitensis
Vanilla Planifolia is grown largely in:~
- Madagascar
- Papua New Guinea
- Uganda
- Tanzania
- India
- Tonga
- Indonesia
- Vanuatu
- Malaysia
- Fiji
- and Mexico ( where it originated, but no longer grown in significant quantities)
Other places are:~Costa Rica, Hawaii, and recently I have seen vanilla beans grown in Australia & New Zealand. These tend to be more expensive, due to higher labor costs
Vanilla Tahitensis, also known as Vanilla Pomona, originated by crossing Planifolia with a wild Mexican vanilla species. It is grown in:~
- Papua New Guinea
- With a very small amount in Indonesia and Tahiti
